Roscoe Sanders wants to use his extensive background in law enforcement and emergency response to maintain and elevate safe learning environments in schools for students, employees and parents.

Sanders has been named Assistant Safety Director for Rutherford County Schools and will work alongside Safe Schools Director Steve McClanahan, other members of the district leadership team, principals and other stakeholders.

“Mr. Sanders has served many years in law enforcement and the military,” Director of Schools Jimmy Sullivan said upon making the announcement. “Our schools have remained safe because of a robust partnership with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, and with Mr. Sanders’ extensive background as a School Resource Officer at one of our comprehensive high schools, he will be an invaluable addition to our safety team.”

Sanders has been a deputy with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office since 2006, and he became a school resource officer in 2012, most recently as a longtime SRO at Siegel High School. He served in the United States Marine Corps for 11 years. In addition, he has served as a law enforcement instructor and has completed multiple specialized trainings, including active shooter threats, Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training, and Emergency Medical Technician certification through Middle Tennessee State University.

"I am incredibly honored and excited to step into the role of Assistant Safety Director for Rutherford County Schools,” Sanders said. “As our county continues to experience historic growth, ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our dedicated county workforce and the community we serve is more critical than ever.”

Sanders added: “My vision for this department is to build a modern, data-driven, and proactive safety culture that moves beyond simple compliance. Safety should not be a set of rules on a checklist; it must be a core value integrated into every single county operation. I am committed to fostering an environment of open communication where every employee feels empowered to identify and report risks, allowing us to address hazards before incidents occur.”

Sanders has a strong ability to build positive relationships and work collaboratively with others, which makes him an ideal addition to the school safety team, Safety Director McClanahan said.

“Throughout the interview process, Mr. Sanders distinguished himself through his calm, confident demeanor and professional approach,” McClanahan said. “His diverse law enforcement experience, both as a patrol officer and a School Resource Officer, provides him with valuable experience and a unique perspective on maintaining a safe and supportive environment. He has a strong understanding of the school community and works effectively with stakeholders.”

Sanders will begin his new role with Rutherford County Schools on Sept. 14. He succeeds former Assistant Safety Director Sean Martin, who recently accepted a role with a law enforcement training organization.
