For the past three years, Rockvale High School has honored the firefighters and other first responders who served on Sept. 11, 2001, by hosting a stair climb at the school’s football stadium.

The event began as a partnership with local firefighters, who used the stadium stairs for their memorialization in years prior. Since then, the stair climb has grown into a larger schoolwide event that brings together students, staff and local first responders.

Since the honorary tradition began, additional programs have joined the climb. Alongside local first responders, Rockvale’s Fire Management and Science program has helped organize the event where staff and entire classes, including Career & Technical Education and Health and Wellness participate.

During the hour-long event there are six rounds. Participants are encouraged to climb up and down the stairs for as long as they are able.

“When you see our local firefighters completing the climb in full gear, you gain an even greater appreciation for the commitment, sacrifice, and dedication they demonstrate every day while serving our community,” said JROTC Chad Degnan. “This is more than a workout—it is an opportunity to honor the 343 firefighters who gave their lives on 9/11 and to recognize the men and women who continue to serve others today.”
