Reminder: 2017-2018 applications for magnet school deadline Jan. 31

Applications for Rutherford County Schools' three magnet schools — Central Magnet School, McFadden School of Excellence and Thurman Francis Arts Academy — are due by Jan. 31, 2017 for those parents applying for the 2017-2018 school year. Contact the schools directly for additional information (SCHOOL CONTACT INFO).


JUNIOR PARENTS: Applications for high school internships due Feb. 1

Parents of juniors won't want to miss this important application date. 

Applications for the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce's High School Internship Program are due by Feb. 1. Interview spaces are limited and the internships are paid. The summer program is for rising seniors.

Peer Model applications for Special Ed preschoools available Feb. 1

Applications for Peer Models for the Special Education Integrated Preschool Program for the 2017-2018 school year will be available on the RCS website on Feb. 1 under the Special Education section. 

These applications may be submitted by fax, e-mail or in person by March 10.  The mandatory screening will be held on Saturday, March 18, from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at Barfield Elementary School and Stewartsboro Elementary School.

This screening is required for any applicant that wishes to be considered as a peer model for the upcoming school year.  All details of the program are outlined within the application online.


$10,000 Richard Siegel Foundation scholarship applications due March 1

The 2017 Richard Siegel Foundation Scholarship guidelines and application are attached.  The deadline for application is close of business day (5 p.m.) on March 10, 2017. The scholarships are worth up to $10,000.

Ascend Credit offering 12 $1,000 scholarships, deadline March 1

Ascend Federal Credit Union will once again offer $1,000 scholarships to 12 local students. The deadline to apply is March 1.

School board member Coy Young uses rural upbringing to usher his service to Rutherford County families, students

School Board member Coy Young lives in Lascassass and represents School Board Zone 2, which is comprised of County Commission zones 1, 2 and 3.

It’s not a picket fence.

However, it is a long bright white three-board vinyl horse fence that outlines the Young family’s countryside property on the outskirts of Lascassas.

At the end of the driveway sits a quintessential two-story farmhouse that Coy and his wife Jennifer call home. It’s everything the couple ever wanted — a peaceful place outside of town.

Some might even say, it’s a picturesque setting.

“I came here because I liked the rural life,” said Young, who grew up nearby. “And Lascassas is about the last place in Rutherford County, well, it’s the slowest growing and we were always looking for acreage out this way. We found this place and thought it was a great place to raise a family.” CONTINUE READING


Rutherford County Schools launches all new websites, app coming soon

Rutherford County Schools has launched new websites for the school district and all 46 schools. The purpose of the new sites is to be make it easier for parents to find information using any Internet-connected device, including mobile devices. 

The new sites automatically optimize to mobile devices when viewed using smartphones or tablets. In addition, an RCS mobile app for iOS and Android will launch soon. 

The new sites also allow parents to subscribe to calendars for their schools and the district. To do so, follow the calendar link on the new sites and click the subscribe link, which will then add the school or district calendar to your personal calendar. 

Please note that if you have bookmarked links to the old school websites, they will no longer work. The address for the district site is www.rcschools.net, which contains links to all of the new school sites.

  • Thursday, February 2: Early Dismissal (3 hour, 15-minute day for students)
  • Wednesday, February 8 – Friday, February 10: Progress reports
  • Monday, February 20: President’s Day (Schools closed)
  • Thursday, March 9: Early Dismissal (3 hour, 15-minute day for students) 
  • Friday, March 10: End of 3rd nine weeks
  • Thursday, March 16: 3rd nine weeks report cards
  • Tuesday, March 21: Parent / Teacher Conferences (grades PK-5) 
  • Thursday, March 23: Parent / Teacher Conferences (grades 6-12) 
  • Monday, March 27 - Friday, March 31: Spring Break (Schools closed)
