Students throughout Rutherford County were recently encouraged to write essays, poems and letters describing how a teacher influenced their lives.

Oakland senior Shelby Parker wrote the winning essay.

Parker’s inspirational essay featured Oakland social studies teacher Dr. Sarah Masnik.

The contest for “My Favorite Teacher” was sponsored by the Murfreesboro location of Barnes & Noble, which will be hosting an evening of events honoring Masnik on April 28 at 6 p.m.

Barnes & Noble is now encouraging students and fellow teachers from Oakland High School to congratulate Masnik during an event that will also include speeches, performances and an opportunity for students to express their own appreciation for Masnik.

In addition to performances by the Oakland choir and band, the evening will include a book fair. Proceeds from the fair will go towards the purchase of books for the Oakland library.
