Rutherford County Schools is proud to host the first district-led Educator Preparation Provider program in the state of Tennessee. This cohort-based program provides job-embedded secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE), math, and science teachers with the educational foundations and coursework necessary to make a successful transition into the classroom. Classes focus on the main foundational elements of successful teaching: classroom management, classroom assessment, instructional planning, and instructional strategies. While not a degree-conferring program, successful participants who complete the RCS EPP program will earn licensure advancement from practitioner to professional status. Job-embedded participants serve as the official teacher of record in RCS in CTE, math, or science content areas and complete a series of peer observations to diversify their training experience.
 
 
 
WHO:            Individuals pursuing a teaching license for middle or high school math and science or
                     secondary CTE classrooms
        • Math (6-12) or Math (6-10) or Math (6-8) Science (6-8) or Biology (6-12) or Chemistry (6-12) or Earth Science (6-12) or Physics (6-12)
        • Career and Technical Education - Academic (Agriculture, Business, Family & Consumer Science, or Marketing)
        • Career and Technical Education - Occupational (Automotive, Aviation, Barbering, Broadcasting, Carpentry, Concrete/Masonry, Collision Repair, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Drafting/CAD, Digital Arts & Design, Electrical, Fire Safety, Health Informatics, Health Science, HVAC, Information Technology, Legal and Protective Services, Manufacturing, Plumbing, Programming, Supply Chain Management or Welding)
 
WHAT:         Academic candidates must meet the following criteria:
        • Have a completed bachelor's degree with a 2.75 GPA
        • Confirmed job-offer from a RCS district school
        • $1,230 non-refundable tuition for RCS teachers ($205 at time of admissions, $512.50 paid by November 1, $512.50 paid by March 1)
        • Math, Science and Academic CTE candidates must pass the content Praxis or for Math/Science a degree in the content area will exempt you from the content Praxis
 
   Occupational candidates must meet the following criteria:
        • Relevant industry experience
        • Industry certification 
        • Confirmed job offer from a RCS district school
        • $1,230 non-refundable tuition for RCS teachers ($205 at time of admissions, $512.50 paid by November 1, $512.50 paid by March 1)
 
CLASSES:    Teach Now participants meet six days over the summer before the first-year teaching
                      for Summer Induction Part 1, one weekday a month, one Saturday in the Fall and
                      Spring semesters, and three days after the first year of teaching for Summer
                      Induction Part 2 to receive EPP instruction

Tennessee's Grow Your Own program is an initiative to build pipelines for qualified individuals to become teachers through an apprenticeship under the guidance of the university and the partnering school district. Apprentices work in classrooms with mentor teachers to gain on-the-job experience while completing required coursework to become fully licensed teachers. Rutherford County Schools is proud to support future teachers through partnerships with GYO educator preparation programs like Lipscomb and UT Southern, just to name a few.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

    • On-the-job learning with experienced teachers 
    • Earn while you learn model—apprentices receive a living wage while working full-time and pursuing a degree and teaching license
    • Rigorous program designed to train qualified school personnel to fill the teacher shortage from the local community, resulting in a faculty that represents the student population they serve
 
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BECOME A REGISTERED TEACHING APPRENTICE? 
    • Classified employment with the Rutherford County School district
    • U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency 
    • Not currently a licensed or permitted classroom teacher
    • Options available for degreed and non-degreed candidates
