The Rutherford County Board of Education has hired the Tennessee School Boards Association to assist with facilitating applicants for the next Director of Schools.

Current Director Bill Spurlock, who has served in the position since July 2018, has reached an agreement with the School Board to end his contract on June 30, 2022, which is a year earlier than the previous contract.

TSBA is a statewide organization that often is used to facilitate director searches.

Using criteria established by the local elected School Board, TSBA will advertise the position nationwide, vet eligible candidates and present recommendations on those candidates to the School Board. The School Board will then select the candidates it wishes to interview.

Based on a search timeline adopted by the Board during its April 4 special-called meeting, the candidates will be interviewed in mid-May. Those interviews will include daytime meetings with local stakeholders including elected officials, parents and community members, and employees. Those meetings will then be followed by the official interview before the School Board. All interviews will be open to the public.

After completing the interviews, the School Board can then enter into contract negotiations with one of the candidates to begin on July 1, 2022, or if the Board is not satisfied with any of the candidates, it can choose to appoint an interim director.

The school district will provide updates to employees, parents and community members throughout the search process.
