Homer Pittard Campus School students, employees, parents, school district officials, MTSU representatives and other supporters gathered today to dedicate the school's main driveway as "Whorley Way."
The school provided the following information about Liz Whorley, a former teacher and principal of the school.
Who is Mrs. Whorley?
The driveway at Campus School is being named “Whorley Way” in honor of Liz Whorley, a former teacher and principal at the school from 1965-1985. This event and new signs are a project of the support organization, Friends of Campus School. MTSU and Rutherford County Schools assisted in planning and completing the new signs.
Mrs. Whorley was raised on a farm off of the Manchester Highway. She received a degree in education and became a first grade teacher Campus School in 1965. Her corner classroom was on the front of the main hall, overlooking Lytle Street.
In 1979 Mrs. Whorley became the principal. She was devoted to the children, staff, and college students enrolled in MTSU’s teacher-training program. During her years as principal, the school’s first Fall Festival (Apple Day) took place. The physical education and music programs received national recognition. She received a grant for New York’s Mary Anthony’s Dance Troupe to train the children and teachers for a week. The school excelled under her leadership.
Mrs. Whorley monitored students’ safety on the driveway during arrivals and dismissals, as a teacher and principal. Parents called her “Sergeant” because she told them what to do as they drove around the front of the building.
The driveway will now be named “Whorley Way” in honor of Liz Whorley Bradley.
