Rutherford County Schools (“RCS”) is providing notice of a data event that may involve personal information related to certain individuals.
On November 25, 2024, RCS became aware of suspicious activity on its network. RCS promptly took steps to secure its systems and initiated an investigation into the nature and scope of the event. The investigation determined that certain files on RCS’s network were accessed or acquired without authorization from November 5, 2024 to November 25, 2024. In response, RCS undertook an extensive programmatic and manual review of the affected data with the assistance of third-party specialists to determine what information was present and to whom it relates. This review took several months. On September 8, 2025, RCS’s review identified that personal information related to certain individuals was present in the affected files.
The personal information in the affected files includes a combination of certain individuals’ names and the following: Social Security number and driver’s license number.
RCS moved quickly to respond and investigate the suspicious activity and secure its network. RCS also moved to notify potentially impacted individuals. As part of its ongoing commitment to information security, RCS is also reviewing its policies and procedures to reduce the likelihood of similar future events.
Individuals who may be affected by this event are encouraged to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud by reviewing their account statements and monitoring free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors. Suspicious activity should be promptly reported to relevant parties, such as a financial institution.
If you have any questions, RCS has established a help line at 1-833-833-7217, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.
