4-H sewing programs provide hats for RCS students

February 19, 2026

The Rutherford County Agricultural Extension Office 4-H program recently hosted a community sewing event that brought together youth and adults to make a difference for local children in need.

Held on a Saturday at the Lane Agri-Park grounds, the event united the talents of youth in the Rutherford County 4-H sewing program, as well as volunteers from the adult sewing program at the Extension Office to create warm, handmade polar fleece hats for children across Rutherford County.

By the end of the day, 44 volunteers had sewn more than 120 polar fleece hats during 95 accumulated volunteer hours, all of which will be distributed to children who need them most. The key recipients of the donations are the Rutherford County Schools. The Murfreesboro City Schools, as well as school social workers, who will help ensure the hats reach students throughout the community.

All materials for the project were generously provided by the Rutherford County Agricultural Extension Office, allowing participants to focus their time and creativity on giving back. The event not only supported local families but also provided an opportunity for youth and adults to learn valuable sewing skills, work collaboratively, and experience the impact of community service firsthand.

“This project truly showcased the spirit of community and compassion that defines our 4-H and Extension programs,” said Raquel Victor, 4-H agent. “Seeing young people and adults come together to create something meaningful for others is what our programs are all about.”

The Rutherford County Agricultural Extension Office continues to offer educational and service-oriented programs that strengthen community connections and empower residents of all ages.
