MURFREESBORO — Keith Ryan Cartwright, communications specialist for Rutherford County Schools, has earned a master’s degree in journalism through the extension program at Harvard University.
Cartwright, who joined the school district in July 2016, traveled to Cambridge last week to participate in graduation ceremonies in Harvard Yard.
“The first time Dean (Andrew) Engelward referred to us as Harvard alumni, I thought about my mom and my grandparents,” Cartwright shared. “I thought about all the teachers and professors who have impacted my life and, in that moment, I choked up.”
Cartwright works in the communications department with Communications and Community Relations Coordinator James Evans. The department oversees public relations and communications outreach to promote the students, teachers and schools that make up Rutherford County Schools, which consistently ranks among the best school districts in Tennessee.
“Keith brings a passion for storytelling to the job and has covered much ground the past year learning and writing about those people who dedicate themselves to making Rutherford County Schools so great,” Evans said. “We are fortunate to have such a talented, educated professional promoting the work of our schools.”
Cartwright earned his undergraduate degree in Mass Communications from Middle Tennessee State University and has worked as a writer and journalist for multiple years and for a variety of outlets and organizations. In 2013, Cartwright was inducted into the Wall of Fame for the College of Media and Entertainment.
He began pursuing a degree through Harvard three years ago.
“I am so thankful that Harvard has a Department of Continuing Education and that the university offered an extension program for the past 110 years,” Cartwright added. “It afforded me an opportunity to still walk across Harvard Yard — as a mid-career professional — and sit in a classroom that is centuries-old and earn a master’s degree from the most prestigious university in the world. I will forever be grateful for the experiences of the past three years.”
