The Stewarts Creek High School Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at the 61st annual Convention of the Tennessee Music Education Association, in Nashville.

This annual gathering of music educators from across the State of Tennessee and southeast region features performances by some of the state’s best music programs, highlighting exemplary teaching at all levels of instruction, from elementary school through college.

In addition to these performances, music educators will gather for a special announcement from Governor Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Education Commissioner Candice McQueen, who will participate in a round table discussion on music education and the arts in Tennessee.

Since opening in the fall 2013, the Stewarts Creek High School Band is no stranger when it comes to large scale public performances. In November of 2016, the band traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to perform in the Waikiki Holiday Parade and in a special performance to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack on the Pearl Harbor.

The performance for the Tennessee Music Education Association’s 61st annual convention is quite an important milestone for the band program at Stewarts Creek High School. This occasion marks the first time in the 61 years of the convention that a high school band from Rutherford County has been selected to perform.

The process for selection was quite rigorous. Ensembles submitted recordings which were evaluated by a panel of music education professionals. The Stewarts Creek High School Wind Ensemble was one of only two high school bands selected to perform at this convention this year.

For band directors Debbie Burton and Michael Chester, the opportunity to represent the Town of Smyrna and Rutherford County Schools is both humbling and a huge honor at the same time.

“The students have worked hard to prepare for this performance. We are excited and looking forward to sharing their talents with the music educators of Tennessee.” Chester said.

The Stewarts Creek High School Wind Ensemble performance takes place on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 3:00 PM at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center’s Presidential Ballroom D. The event is free and open to the public.
