Rutherford County Schools
There are lots of options for kids during the summer break from school.
One of those opportunities is open gym hours offered at various schools.
Although the program takes place at 25 of the 49 schools in Rutherford County and utilizes the physical education instructors from the respective schools, the program has been overseen by the county recreation department for more than 20 years.
“I know all these kids,” said Jerrod Pilgrim, a physical education teacher at Buchanan Elementary School, “so when they come in, they know exactly what to expect from me.”
Pilgrim added, “We open up the gym to different activities.”
At Buchanan, Pilgrim splits the time with Suszanne Zaccaro, a retired teacher who takes the kids on physical education related field trips on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Trips include everything from bowling and miniature golf and walking the Barfield Trail.
Pilgrim offers open gym activities on Mondays and Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to noon and from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Fridays.
However, the hours vary from one school to another and, please, check with gym leaders regarding hours during the Fourth of July week.
The recreation calendar can be found HERE.

“I enjoy being with the kids,” Pilgrim said.
