A trio of Rutherford County students — Grayson Davis, Collin Barrett and Kymanie Louis —
have been named qualifiers for the 2020 state-level National Geographic Geography Bee contest, state competition officials announced March 2.
Davis is an eighth-grader at Central Magnet and Louis is a seventh-grader at Christiana Middle schools, while Barrett is a fifth-grader at McFadden School of Excellence.
All three will compete in the state competition March 27 on the campus of Tennessee State University.
This year, an estimated 2.4 million students participated with 8,661 school-level winners named and up to 100 students then selected for the state-level competition. School competitions are only the first of three rounds in the annual GeoBee, which was founded in 1989 in response to a growing concern young people in America had a noticeable lack of geographic knowledge. In the past 30-plus years, more than 120 million students have participated, according to information provided from Central Magnet School.
The competition was designed to inspire curiosity.
