Rutherford County Schools began accepting zone exemption applications on Feb. 1 for the 2017-2018 school year. The deadline for priority consideration will be April 15, 2017.

Applications available for free Summer Biz Camp, deadline April 21
Registration is now open for the BEP Summer Business Camp Presented by State Farm scheduled for weekdays of July 17-28, 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. The camp will be hosted by Middle Tennessee State University's College of Education on campus in the McWherter Learning Resource Center.
Students who attend this tuition-free, two-week summer day camp will have the benefit of meeting and working with volunteers from the Rutherford County business community. The camp provides students with the opportunity to explore business as a career option and to understand how the world of business works.
Rising seventh and eighth grade students from Rutherford County are eligible to apply for the camp; however, camp space is limited. Applications are due by April 21, and they are available at rutherfordbep.org/business-camp.

Applications available for Camp M.D., deadline April 21
Registration is now open for BEP’s Camp M.D. presented by Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital, scheduled for June 19-23.
BEP’s Camp M.D. Presented by Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital is a tuition-free summer day camp that introduces students to healthcare careers through interaction with the medical community. Camp M.D. includes tours of local medical facilities, and discussions with healthcare professionals such as physicians, nurses, medical assistants, lab technologists, researchers, and therapists. Student tours will be complemented by off-site activities designed to provide valuable information that will enable students to pursue the education necessary for careers in all levels of healthcare.

Special Olympics fund-raiser at Toots on Church St. Tuesday
Toots on S. Church Street will host a fund-raiser on Tuesday, March 14 from 5-8 p.m. for the Area 16 Special Olympics. The "Wings and Rings" fund-raiser is held each year.
Another will be held the Toot's Broad Street location on April 18 from 5-8 p.m.
The Three A's of Siegel

That could easily describe Siegel High School.
Opened in 2003, the property the school was built on was donated – along with land for two others – by Richard Siegel, as stated in his last will and testament.
The school has a total of 1,760 kids in grades 9-12.
What makes the school unique is the administration, staff, teachers and students pay as much attention to academics and arts as they do athletics, principal Larry Creasy said. CONTINUE READING

MURFREESBORO — They each ordered steak — two medium rare and one medium well.
Along with seven other Kittrell students, they spent the morning of March 8th doing mock interviews with senior management at the Double Tree Hotel. Those 10 students were then narrowed down to the three finalists, who were competing for the top honor in the school’s Great Shake competition.
The Great Shake is a competition started last year at the school by Principal Ynetia Avant and interventionist Ashley Whitaker as a way to teach students the importance of interpersonal skills. CONTINUE READING

Cedar Grove Elementary School celebrates 20th anniversary

LA VERGNE -Dawn Waldron has a hard time remembering any big changes that have occurred at Cedar Grove Elementary School in the last 20 years.
“It still has the team dynamic that (former principal) Mr. Gill started all those years ago,” said Waldron, a kindergarten teacher at the school, “and the family atmosphere.”
Waldron is one of the “original eight,” those teachers and education assistants who were among the first employees of the school and still work there today.
Former and current students, employees and parents gathered at the school today to celebrate its 20th anniversary with the community. CONTINUE READING
