Marianne Chumley’s classroom was buzzing with excitement about the opportunity to hear more about an unsolved mystery.

Amelia Earhart’s plane went missing over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937.

Deep Sea Vision - a South Carolina based company determined to find Earhart’s plane - recently detected a sonar image that looks to be the Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft flown by Earhart.

Chumley reached out to the company directly to see if someone would speak to her students.

Lloyd Romero - project manager at Deep Sea Vision - recently called in to speak with Chumley’s class about the company’s findings.

“Mr. Romero answered all our questions and confirmed some class findings from our own research,” Chumley said. “He gave us an approximate location of the plane and let us know that Deep Sea Vision will be headed out soon on another expedition to confirm the identity of the plane.”

The class looks forward to this fall or winter when the results will likely be confirmed.

“This was a great opportunity for my students,” Chumley said. “I hope they always search for answers and strive to know more about topics that interest them.  While we are working hard in school every day, incredible people are doing incredible things around the world.  This was an opportunity for them to be a part of history and "fingers crossed" one that will end up being the greatest mystery ever solved.”
