Inclement weather procedures for employees

Attached to this newsletter are the inclement weather procedures for each category of employees. With the potential for winter weather in the long-rage forecast, please make sure you are familiar with these procedures.

If schools are to be closed or delayed because of inclement weather, the school district's communication office will release information through a variety of channels to ensure employees, parents and students are aware. The announcement will be posted on the district's website, through the district's social media channels, a phone call, email and text will be sent to parents and employees, and the announcement will be shared will all local media. You can follow the district on social media with Facebook and Twitter

A RISING TIDE

At LaVergne High School, administrators and teachers putting interests of students first to change culture and lift expectations

Pictured from left to right is Criminal Justice Club advisor Nicolette Dowling and club members Nayla Mendrano, Rudy Vazquez and Oscar Porto.

Rudy Vazquez never forgot the snickers.

He still remembers being told the other schools at a SkillsUSA competition for criminal justice clubs weren’t taking LaVergne High School seriously.

Vazquez is president of the club at LaVergne and, in 2015, the school was competing for the first time in years. They didn’t win the overall competition or any individual areas of competition, but they surprised a few people with a handful of second and third place finishes.

That was nothing compared to the shock last month.

With only seven days to prepare for this year’s SkillsUSA competition, they won the overall event hosted by Spring Hill High School.

LaVergne High School JROTC cadets prepare food for their first community meal, which was held in December 2015. The students are hosting another free community meal this Saturday (Dec. 10) from 5-7 p.m. at the school.

Any and all residents of La Vergne are invited to bring their appetites and join students at LaVergne High School for a free community meal.

JROTC cadets at the school are hosting the dinner, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 5-7 p.m. in the LHS cafeteria.

“We’re inviting families, friends and so forth in the community,” Lt. Col. (Ret.) Glenn Shirley said. “Our cadets are going to be cooking and serving those meals.”

The meal will consist of turkey, ham, dressing, corn, green beans, dessert and more, Shirley said.

This year is the second time the cadets have held such an event. They first offered the meal last Christmas season, but because it was held the weekend after schools let out for winter break, the attendance was less than they had hoped, Shirley said.  CONTINUE READING

Sixty-four Rutherford County teachers earned innovation grants from Nissan North America and the Business Education Partnership.

How does a raisin react when dropped in various liquids? Will it sink, float or fizzle?

Those are some of the questions kindergartners will explore at Blackman Elementary School after they return from winter break thanks to a new innovation minigrant the school has been awarded through Nissan North America and the Rutherford County Business Education Partnership.

Blackman teachers Ashley Thomas, Katrina Butler and Kim Marable are three of 64 Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City school teachers who received the grants on Tuesday, Dec. 6, during an awards breakfast held at the Stones River Country Club in Murfreesboro.

Linebaugh Library wants to donate cases of new books to teachers

books recently. It is far more than they can handle, and they would like to offer these books to county and city teachers who can use them in their classrooms or distribute them to children.

The books are in the Aldo Zelnick Comic Novel series and are suitable for children from ages 9-12. The titles are:

  • Artsy Fartsy (Book 1) — 8 cases
  • Bogus (Book 2) — 5 cases
  • Finicky (Book 6) — 16 cases
  • Ignoramus (Book 9) — 12 cases
  • Jackpot (Book 10) — 13 cases
  • All Me, All the Time — 3 cases (This title is a book that the children complete about themselves and is by the same author.)

They also have 4-5 cases of Jacqueline Kennedy: Historic Conversations on Life with John F. Kennedy. This is a collection of interviews with Mrs. Kennedy by Arthur M Schlesinger, Jr. and took place in 1964. It consists of eight CDs.

They would like to offer any of these titles to interested teachers but need to get them out of the small bookstore by the end of January. If any teachers in are interested, please email [email protected].
