Erin's Law

"Erin's Law" is a federal law that passed in Tennessee in 2014.  "Erin's Law" requires that all public schools in TN implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program that teaches students in grade Pre-K -12, age-appropriate techniques to recognize abuse and to tell a trusted adult.

For Elementary Schools, the curriculum that is used is Child Protection in Schools | Second Step.

For Middle Schools, the curriculum that is used is Safer, Smarter Teens: Personal Power.

 

These meet the following School Counseling Standards: 

  • SA1 - Develop positive attitudes toward self as a unique and worthy person
  • SS2 - Advocate for self in multiple settings using assertiveness skills
  • SS5 - Exercise personal safety skills, including refusal skills
  • SS10 - Appropriately utilize social media to enhance learning, develop positive relationships, communicate, and engage in appropriate entertainment.
  • SK2 - Compare and contrast healthy vs. unhealthy behaviors
  • SK3 - Distinguish appropriate behaviors for a variety of settings and situations
  • SE4 - Create and sustain positive, supportive, and appropriate relationships with peers and adults

Talking about abuse is difficult, however it starts the healing process. Keeping it hidden will only slow the progress of moving forward with your life.
