Dr. Theowauna Hatchett recently took over as the new principal of Smyrna Middle School after former principal Steve Luker was named principal of Rockvale High School. Dr. Hatchett sat down with Communications Director James Evans and Communications Specialist Keith Ryan Cartwright to discuss her connection with the students at Smyrna Middle and her plans for leading the school.

special guest your new role with the school system looking forward to continuing to grow and Addition Elle when did you officially start think so what's the first thing you do to get to know your staff for them to get to know you actually was able to meet with the most almonds how I am and how I interact. so what did you do differently starting in the middle of using would have done had started in the fall and are there some things that may be going to wait till the summer to start to roll out and in I think it's a blessing coming in in the middle of the year because of opportunity to just learn learn to get to know my people build relationships before I have to make any major decisions that I wouldn't make any decisions to get the key areas that I need to focus what did you serve before you came to Smyrna Middle Stewarts Creek High School changes so far between being high school environment versus Middle School not really I could only taught Middle School in high school teacher still teaching and doing great job call Trip share something I value refer to a little bit now and it was quote what is it about that opportunity to build relationship still connected to my life and if you were to ask him where they would have thought I thought I'd be successful but it was really because of the connection between education and lifelong success so I'm definitely here today and in this position with a doctorate in educational background I just thought was a relationship that's what I value because I think that tree of my life talk about that as far as relationship coaches are the ones are always going to stand outside stop learned so many things to be great and those are people who have reached out to me to this day when I got this position and I've been so just proud of me and they congratulated me and give me, that means a lot has changed listening to you mentioned it back in those days teachers could probably little more Hands-On or whatever your age how do you make some kind of connection boundary between the moment. the counselor how to make a hopper to our students you're halfway through the year that the students are Delirious you are new to the building making sure I'm getting into the early morning bus to the area the basketball game when they are difficult already the kids to school we need to listen to listen to kids kids have something to say play coming in are you really have to rely on your hand so where did you go to school Waldron and I finished out at LaVergne High School luxurious background that says how did you know where you were in grade school teaching is what I want to do and now educational camps in school funny face paint cuz I was I was a clown or principal play my entire career and I think you're not a spray class I learned more about the connections between life and education that was just instrumental my plan for my life to go to school for college scholarship in Maryville College and then I did not sleep originally when it's go into teaching I have a psychology degree if I did a lot of work and family I working with troubled youth Masters in special education teacher originally in Sumter County metal and then I'll later transferred to Smyrna Middle and I finished up my teaching at Blackman Middle so how long were you I was in Special Ed a little bit because I was kids have so many different names that are in the big how do you apply at and what you're doing now in education for all students better perspective on how to do how to do that and what about basketball player you coached as well did that school in charge of the entire School stormy I learned that only for students for fruit where you put your people in the faces with her and then just let them do their thing and then just imagine I'm guessing you probably do the same thing with your teachers right right or ironic in a wave you knew you wanted to go into a leadership role and you and Doctor Mark Academy people go into that Academy for leadership principles later your name fruitful I am so participate a great experience off, my mentor coming to my building are the top three different things that I'm actually even before going into the role of the principal Sienna had a great conversation coaching conversation just how that might look. principals Academy for school leadership what what is an Ascend did not suggest as your Mentor she's the course to Prince look like in high school but what else is that entail in the program classes seminars at Vanderbilt University speaker system extensive background of leading schools or what have you can also has a network Kali Center across different places in Tennessee talking parents he was transitioning out of that role when you were transitioning very positive and encouraging he definitely let me know if he's been Grace I called him several times but he's always been available in it we always ask this question but you already kind of answer that I want to know why we always ask who's that teacher that inspired your successful and I just kind of thought that's what my family.
