School nurses are vital components of schools' and students' success, although parents may not be fully aware of all the important duties those nurses perform. Sarah Winters, the director of School Health Services for Rutherford County Schools, recently sat down with RCS Communications Coordinator James Evans and Communications Specialist Keith Ryan Cartwright to discuss the school nurse program with topics ranging from routine care, to first responder training and how all RCS fifth-graders now receive CPR training.

James Evans the classroom podcast today and we're talking today with Sarah Winters who's the director of Social Services provided by county school nurse at 3 director of the department in 2011 misconception that people have based on their own childhood or television or whatever I want us to in charge of taking temperatures and wiping noses and things like that in the where the little boy in the white uniforms all those kinds of things nurses in the school setting or are professional Parts procedures activities that School nurses used to do tremendously over the last 10 or 15 years are surviving things that he needs to survive 15 years ago 20 years ago children who didn't survive you are able to attend school the nurses are responsible for making sure they have their G tube feeding I need to go home someone will say I need a certain school is close to where I work and I shot required XYZ for medical care and you know what is a nurse it's available the meaning of the USA place your team can be met some of the I guess that the bigger in general types of real life yeah I'm just curious like you know, like what's the worse the worst the biggest ones you have to deal with no way to communicate set up child can attend school ever see special education services received talk a little bit about I guess we would call it preventive care no. a wound or something like that and it was amazing because of things that and I wanted to send a message train with CPR out of metal bars have been doing that thing director that was one of my goal was I wanted to confirm a score office CPR every year to have a cardiac arrest and what it means call for help call nine-one-one in do compression for such a large District that's just pretty credible about to start raining the first responder training they come out with the red bag that we will have our CSA on them specifically to train teachers in third a car safety I'm out of the car built medical center drill met the requirements of project Adam so we're all now considered a heart safe School District so depending on the size of those First Responders there coaches teachers administrators front office staff training first aid CPR to use the AED and a drill for a suit or an adult who needs students are also trained in the AED in that several times a year maybe on announcements will discuss these are make sure that the student someone who's in a medical emergency they need to call for help that site that we only bring it to their attention the semester and it was now a freshman there was a few years ago I had a cardiac event passed out during still take type of things Staples for absolutely DPR implanted defibrillator pretty rapidly stories a lots of the nurse and the nurse might be embarrassed about just ask questions that you know maybe they also the nurses are secretary truancy officers notice somebody comes to them instead of 6 tools have a full-time nurse that all day long I registered nurse sometimes it making a phone call to appearance notice to the doctor's chair for kids that your parent didn't realize that they said they actually needed a specialist or some kind of medical intervention can you and your staff you guys offer like psychological counseling or social services or are you more aware of put in touch with the proper there was a child High School teachers and vomiting and first got involved after the family use one of the school social workers to to do some communication so that they made a referral to a specialist you know you mentioned all the schools except for 6 how many do you have your staff in District and also a pool of substitute nurses but we have the number of field trips in Persian but there's so many of them there's a diabetic going out of the building we have to send a licensed Healthcare I said those people or out on medical leave for maternity leave there so I have a pool about and it walks away from me about 12 schools are field trips or from the state now schools for single 49ers another year 45000 kids Prada low cost at 46,000 Mark and I we we passed in this year which is always use kind of has the fourth largest in the state of us now even though people Timmy Suburban County were very large Suburban County lot of people so nurse earlier career worked at Vanderbilt the trauma unit anxiety of a treating all the people who died car accidents got to me so I move to a different Critical Care area and when I move back into the district what's my family I wanted to do something that was a little bit more so did alter help after car accident after you know what people have done to their bodies throughout their lives and it was just starting to get to talk for tunity to intervene with children you talk about habits and you talk about working up dreams this is the school did at the end of they were educating kids and and health plays a big part in that unless the cheat code to make healthy healthy like I don't have the flu or a healthy decision of my supervisor coordinator and 1st and 4th graders siblings are family members Cherry choices on vacation every year visuals that shows the abideth caring too much weight does a normal skeleton looks like it's hearing what state is an opportunity to educate and that's that's really what the nurses do is to let you know they would ask me about the Oregon body and what it does then just every interaction you never know what that what that child going to take away from that and go home and maybe tell their
