Most parents may not have heard of Beth Duffield, but her work with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce has been vital the past few years to connect RCS students with local industry partners who are searching for qualified workers to fill high-paying jobs. James Evans and Keith Ryan Cartwright with Rutherford County Schools recently sat down with Duffield to talk with her about this important role and how parents can help their children identify and work toward a fulfilling career pathway before graduating high school.

hello everyone this is James Evans IMDb Communications coordinator for Rutherford County schools and I'm here today with Keith Reinhardt rides who is our communication specialist in the field for our Podcast Beyond who you are and in what's your title is with the Chamber of Commerce and saint of students and parents in our school or City Chamber of Commerce who is I get up everyday thinking about how we can help student connections to their future career and College factoring Healthcare it many Democratic mainly on when do I the drive or what's high school going to be like how do you even approach to have to start talking about long-range career plans and things like benefits and job interest and all those kinds of things really start in elementary school conversation starter opportunities for them to get out that we have in our community career and Technology destruction College what kind of career opportunities are available for a great quality and we have great job opportunities for through Workforce Development initiative booty dance around career exploration little more intensive and middle school we just finished celebrating there so many students in school administrators out industry to really need our from our partners as well as technical skills I'm keeping my car radio is going to be on the classroom and you touched down a lot there but I think one thing you probably are you trying to help our students in Rutherford County find a pathway find a pathway to keeping I'm employed and we want them to stay here I know I have children helping helping those in find that helping your business partners physician and it's really that career exploration Elementary little more exploration in Middle School 8th graders really understand what options are available for the High School Weatherford county I'm going to Harvard or speak at Murfreesboro understanding technical education industry certification field trip internship work-based learning all of that will help I think it's really interesting this is James Evans listen to beyond the classroom podcast because we have the school system not going to say that cuz I work for this Crystal so now you and I and I mean I'm just so important to have the calendar programs available here hybrid business Community is more more moving here and sometimes people don't realize how those two things are the first questions that companies ask when they're exploring where to locate is what your school system like what's the workforce like you talk about those kind of conversations that you guys have with the chamber was all about Transportation looking for to choose a location on any agenda around mission of relocation do we have a qualified Workforce in that Community Education industry because even if our industry didn't reach back into our schools and do support through classroom activities and field trips and internship your children are going to school here in our community so I'm interested that is a great education to get out of Industry to get out of it and try to work together it is a long-term commitment to Channel 6 News Lebanon New hearing and talk about your experience first off I've noticed that it's for my mom wanted to call me back children services curious about cheetahs live in Virginia to Middle Tennessee multiple careers in in my initial career was in marketing and work for McDonald's corporation which was a great experience working for Fortune 500 Indiana I'm just threw some Southwest Virginia for 7 years and college there in Abingdon Virginia the Workforce Development they were looking for someone part-time that has employee relations a night time job short-term training programs for employers versus the Outreach into our school system was what helps me develop our strategic plan here in Southwest Virginia early 2000 to 2010 economically challenged not just because the recession but even before that nap time and lots of jobs disappeared First Tennessee Rutherford County even through the recession we had jobs and we're continuing to grow and we continue to grow as an amazing and our employers of Community Partners are schools are much more eager to be a part of the solution and everybody work together that I have experience in other places where the economy is not so healthy hear the people want to work together cuz it's not common very fortunate to have such a great School Charter School the other worker City do we have here in Weatherford for job opportunities location location location watching companies open up here along 8:40 and 24 location their communities and make a difference and reach out patient is required for seeing such great slavering of effort I just spent two weeks in my hometown and not only is it a great dishes if Progressive but I also think the companies that are around here some of the leaders of Industry song Bridgestone Swan some of the others that you work with Progressive did the company called Scotch Corporation with the big International Company threatening to leave and this is not the relationship we have with school district in being able to develop we won we won front property to build our our headquarters and so the only riverfront property the city-owned was a municipal golf course so they close the golf course in the riverfront property to build their new headquarters that wouldn't it just wouldn't happen here but I mean but I guess what I'm getting at is there's just a different mindset here what are some people take for granted like me having a ability go all that happened and I was just like what we hear from people like Nissan Bridgestone and in Oshkosh Corp with their they're 13 + billion dollar contract with the government the bill company riverfront property with other partners in and I think that's his dad you need to hear it like I said I just never understood how it happened you just thankful it did happen individuals who are working in the park and I'll call out I'm very thankful for their partnership Nissan who serves on the education health committee that officers those are people who do not on a daily basis of partnership and our students and doing what is right for our industry continue to do that I have some theories on how people moving forward and initiating things you should come to school and set up meetings to record with principles to say that idea and then print willing to say who we have the sea University hear that University of tissue that you mention leasing to go to that location and it's just like we got all those ingredients I moved here to go to college and we left my family left for about a year and did everything we could just to come back cuz it was so foggy up here and we have no plans to leave we just know that's what happen to have hit the lottery and buy a beach house this is the place. guest house don't worry about it now so I as a little girl in Virginia what did you picture is being your career hey look at some of these options that may be might be considered non traditional or different mindset that it was pretty rhule Virginia border of Tennessee their teacher because here's the 40 years at a technical school told me to go to college but in terms of teachers show can party kind of have cemented in their heads by doctor lawyer nurse additional careers in healthcare we certainly need more horses and I think he's been accepted in Ivy League school very smart technical education pathway I don't care that I have this date in high school so I thought well that's really good healthcare administration there's quality there's a better job of exposing students asking them in third grade are going to expose them to a wide variety of opportunities with this is what I want to do or have no I'm going to go in a different direction will help students making poor choices about his secondary option to the billions and billions of dollars on scene based on like the dorm or hey I like this fraternity or sorority College promise for 2 to 3 years of school at art community colleges and really all of a sudden show your associate's degree in terms of Tim Trinity's and Highway job opportunities different than just a blanket statement that everybody knew schedule for University back in the older days even when I was in school which was $20 cash no classes there was at least at the Chino 20 shot class girls with the homie I can you build your wooden box and they would sell their dresses or whatever you do in a gun case I'm so so so so sometimes I have her parents say wow community colleges with all the different career Pathways it's that students can experiment with and we got Dental Programs and cosmetology things that students can try out and then what is she part is we've been having the tours and all those kinds of things for state of being a Hands-On just like you said we've had so many students who have said and I tried it on for a semester of to decided that's not exactly what I want to do there was something in that and so instead of going to college and wasting two years and spending money on that they're kind of experimenting of younger age what they want to do when they get older chip today or die I hope they realize how lucky they are to have all these various pathways Hannah Montana go back typewriter and then I will be there going to be a Storyteller and be a writer or I was going to be an architect I need a house and building a story similar in many ways than I remember asking for that typewriter and telling my momma use it for the rest of my life well I mean yeah I'll turn it on typewriter which is what I would but I guess you helped organize tell me what does cancer what their purpose is an organization called jobs for the future which is a nonprofit based out of Boston what was working with the state of Tennessee Department of Education country Partners in a study statistics data careers as I mentioned construction supply chain based on started having conversations with employers borders from construction company Community Healthcare companies manufacturing companies to open up those conversations with invite employers together to identify challenges not to complain and identify identify Solutions Partners to the temple to ask them to help us too Princeton for some resources for a national Healthcare Corporation here in Murfreesboro helping all of the students are health science programs across the County high school graduate college career watch your head to my school's arnab certified medical assisting certification job that they graduate high school because they have very different the voice of industry is so important Education City Council we're helping industry which other right you're listening to be on the classroom at least one the one what are the things that gets mentioned in each and every one of those is the internship program that you guys have with Rutherford and a little bit of the word Millennial and it was the first time today we said the word Millennial and then me and some of the profiles I do for the Butler County website for some incredible hope for the future of of accomplishing and influence some incredible things internship program is one of our Flagship program through the chamber 4 years of interns could we have done better heading towards college graduation here shortly we started that program because you were student with well we actually have the lowest number of teams in working in Tennessee and across the country in lower seat the Great Depression employment anymore your last week at a conference say that in looking at the last 25 years or looked at what are the key concepts of the key skills was critical to successful to work harder Hersey Michigan study having had chores and don't work on a regular 2% of parents make their kids on a regular basis for internship program this year were heading into 45 and 45 caliber 260 development classes with them at the end of the day I can work with the students did you send me a fortunate to have some amazing. internships in Park High School doing chores is going to lead to future success for my kids and so I'm going to play them this podcast later House of Poor Boys hand they have to make they have to do their chores even has some things you supposed to do with your future kitchen a couple of Workforce Development talk about we just can't find people that will show up show up show up on County Tennessee called work graduation graduation senior this year gone out to all of our high school already presented the boulders to complete documentation distinction disciplinary action 21 on the ACT with Telegraph and career-ready burgers examples standards for which they can earn Point documentation they can buy green cords for graduation all of it is that we have 70 employers who have agreed to offer an interview as well as on the folder that the students received at the great Brandon ready for a company to get the name so they can go to college school and then come back and show him or years ago or two years ago I graduated was obvious. halfway fairs and we have actual industry partnership coming to the schools and students sign up for two or three things that are interesting to explore and choose what happened they want to pursue in high school really cool it is the actual I have everything I don't work with him sure my aptitude with gears for teaching and interesting aptitude inventory careers that they are much more interesting is that fair which that help them describe themselves that they can use for other purposes where students choose for studying High School Indiana manufacturing opportunity do it Digital Electronics Jam Target conversation to the student specifically and then temperature is about to have conversations with their students Nissan in terms of jobs in industrial maintenance science or I'm coming to Gen X or you science which is spelled y OU signs of. It's the science of you as a really great program was uses on us pilot bases in from other schools and they've had some great success with that guest to tell us this one answer and usually everyone has that one teacher that just really got to believe in them can you recall who that was murdered Watson first grade really inspired me to be successful in education first grade.
