The Southeastern Young Adult Book Festival — commonly known as SE-YA — will be held at MTSU March 7-9. The first two days are student days and the third day, which is completely free, is for the general public. More than 40 young adult authors will be on hand. We spoke to Barb Collie and Liz Hicks, librarians at Stewarts Creek High School, who are two of the founding members of SE-YA.

this is James Evans is always with Keith Ryan Cartwright and we are talking with Barb collie and Arts Festival let's start off their what is Sia even stand for we love our acronyms in education but what's the evening Southeastern young adults acceptable and we are at covering our a region in our area what makes it primarily you make it we have dedicated Tuesday we're only schools are allowed to come to bring Jaden has been doing this now deal with barn on a road trip from Charleston South Carolina he went to Charleston and we went with the two of us Marceline and Aaron Alvarado who are both well and at the time librarian and we went to the mall and we love you Frosty dance with him in Minnesota turn to Corona we started out our first year we had about 1,200 students attended and this year as of today we have 3100 events register when you think back to that road trip any idea you guys can just talk about ideas and throwing it out and brainstorming what you would could you imagine I hear you are 4 years later it's four years of real no it was a man. Library conference we connected with Stephen and Sharon Cameron and I shared our vision with them and similar area and said they were very instrumental in helping us get started and the first year we had several authors I can't believe it's the first year that we were having the festival and I think a lot of that goes from the meeting of those mine coming from perspective of the authors as well Brian Cartwright again you listening to be on the classroom now perfect time to really set up Festival March 9th open to the public from that point I'm going to turn it over to another teacher what is everyone have to know cheers Festival knowing that it is next week on March 7th 8th and 9th all of our funny we are a 501 c 3 nonprofit grants and donations and is getting to the festival in the car Associated on Saturday we are also free and then there will be a bit throughout the day author speaking, con appreciation it's like that except for young adult authors and book our target audience higher grades seven through twelve but we have so many adult attending the particularly on the community days because adults well everything of course that you would want to know about if our time to schedule for the Community Day on fillable on our website. Com we also have as professional development in fact of Rutherford County are we in town pool section of educator to get in service hours at 4 today available at our information and ask. that we have added and our local people and workshop a lot of them are 14 but Educators can attend as well as the imperfect Pacific information for the writing Workshop are on our website we have at 8 Instagram we have Twitter people to connect with us and all of us and through our social media by two bars for the oppression MTSU correct we've had a great partnership with issue in the bookstore there and they do a great job of handling all of the author signings and sales and all of that and it takes like a patient will be taking place in the Boe called train station and the business and are they building the VA for that one pocket of camping because the girls state tournament will be taking play on the other side of Kansas post we tried dejan on that vibrates to be another four years in a two-part question like you start talking about 40 41 at what time where all the taking place is in the planning at does it get any easier start doing the schedule we call it going into the Matrix because if I stay under hiking and I'm calling into work backward here and say that we make that schedule these look at the authors that we have planned and we come up with panel idea that I mean is hours and hours of work just on and that doesn't even address the planning that goes into getting the authors to come the young adult community and Oak want to attend we started with invitation for the price of ripple effect schedule we've made all that work out and it's a year what does liepard evolve accessible free we have to write Grant and find sponsors and said that that's something that were always working towards having fundraisers all kinds of different ideas and looking for resources for that last year we had 85 community ears in addition to our 12 working for thankfully keep coming back year after year and so dedicated to this this is James Evans going to this morning about who's on the lineup this year and I wanted was your first four years ago did you know that you got a phone call or email to what it was and someone said and then you like okay now we have to deliver Bloomington we had a Courtney Stevens and Sharon Cameron who are both local National offer but no authors and Friends that was that was exciting but I'll never see my bathroom getting ready for work I saw an email come through and I clicked on it and it was from Lauren Oliver New York Times published author very well-known very well respected and it's really happening but that's the moment that happens to me all of the time the other day and I said Advocate Academy Theater me and Sharon did the inbox the first year and it was and every time invite and who at all and I have schedule conflicts and what not send even even our Fleet ask again that's very exciting you know and they know patient and Community about I mean you know there's that whole maintaining success you know there's I filled some time but I will say it's being cool people data after every Festival if we act offer and we at the people who attend how can we improve if we give him a chance to assess our performance and I think that's one of the success that we have taken those comments and constructive criticism and apply them to the event continue to Crow about it I talked about it and then I tell a friend and I are riding important do you have somebody just like you know. Have you want to say that but authors and New York Times best sellers too but thank you all we do have extremely excited about we have to see me again we haven't met yet and I'm really looking forward to meeting at Tiffany Jackson and I'm really excited meet her and she's never been before we have Becky albertalli coming back and a lot of people are familiar with Becky's work on the book by member, but it was just made into a film love Simon so we're really excited about Becky coming back second visit yeah I'm excited about the idea to run book called the wrath and the dawn it's a new year time is it was one of those that wasn't sure I'm going to like it I read it and then I loved it and I understood I'm trying to think I mean it. Williams try that again this year and a soup in one of their time before and a 07 New York Times bestseller Jack Bittner David Arnold What's really interesting about career has grown as your Festival has grown in your you're fortunate that he has been David has been incredibly supportive for example last year pulling up to the side and say is what you're doing well in the sea she said we do better than anybody else getting students to the festival you got a lot of why I Book Festival and as I mentioned Thursday and Friday middle school and high school student dr. Better than anybody else and that was an incredible compliment and then he was getting diverse authors who are fat I haven't had much success with that would have much greater right from here on the boards for free all that didn't and he also had some great advice in the areas diversity week we text her and certificate and invites went out first and we definitely needed 33% of persons of color and Achieve that I think they treated it actually something that all young adult authors are getting behind that importance of being on it we have such a person in this County you owed our students it's it's good for and here point of view that are like there but also that are different from their butt great window to when you talk about like on Saturday for the kid authors are there Rockstar pain and kind of the way that that happen in in another piece of healthy you think about is Liv and I know what it the real when an author came to our pool a few years ago I think it was the first year Mike Mullen came and Mike Mullen Road asphalt. Then that theory that the one of our most circulated series one because it's good about a super volcano that it closes since the world into action winter but it's also I think because word-of-mouth we noticed about that way of having one author in our school created an increase in reading that authors books and you're like what would happen if the whole festival is to increase literacy and we want reading and writing reading and writing reading and writing skills are one of the best returners of success at the next level whether that's careers were always or whatever not know that when you're looking at this could be a librarian question leaders at the high school level seems like it's easier to get them interested in high school picture we're open at the high school level, or Fest there are young adult literature tell popular sad I don't I don't like the term because I think that connect with in terms of our library particularly as an individual and putting them in the hands of the reader is life-changing and I know there was a young man that cheated when you're in a teacher with making check out of do you like Noah and the fabulous breathe the first was very individual thing didn't that you know we do we call it an interview and we want to make sure that we're the right look with those with the right person skip this plug this one more time tell us everything that that our listeners need to know for next week that you really want to emphasize them and date Thai there than it did it one more time to make sure they will be clear about it all Rutherford County Middle High School on Thursday and Friday or Friday actually there's like that peel potato Land Rover County have to do a group of attending so I'd like to really focus on the public day which is Saturday March 9th writing Workshop Garden find first all the information that you would need to know it's on our website is effect on the show me to register for a writing Workshop that's enough to be found on our website and Sarah five different authors and Gary and Drew Barry Allen. everything takes place on campus PSU there will be panels there will be off and take photos and I will be taking place all through the day I think student accounting for they are coming on that field trip on Saturday and Sunday there in track we can't have everybody see every every author as over there there's not enough time that they want to see that they're not getting today under trip come back on Saturday and said that's a good time to head to touch base with other people sit up bar selling off it would be like a VIP experience you know where to go to convert you to tear someone for 4 Mercy someone perform that's one thing but if you have a VIP package is like with no VIP wire everybody all right one last thing we do this with all of our guests are we try to we're going to start with you but at least one that was Bad Teacher the one that just inspired it was like to hear that cuz we education podcast so it at that time fifth grade teacher was miss her and she was fabulous and I came in and that's cool and again in the 5th grade at the top level in that school and she took me under her wings and I really make me feel a part deported me and taught me that education at the start of relationship and building that relationship established teachers all along the way but I just think he drew I mean none of that relationship he my friend today she actually ended up being a librarian and he's just smart and kind and hard-working and thanks again for joining us to stay in and you know we're excited to see something come out of Rutherford County I know you guys are doing a lot of work that's probably unappreciated by a lot of people they don't want us was going to but we appreciate what you doing
